Germany publishes unusually deep company data for free. The Handelsregister shows every company's legal form, share capital and managing directors, and annual accounts are free to read on the Unternehmensregister. Almost none of it is machine readable: there is no official free API, so tracking a German competitor still means reading register announcements by hand.

Every other guide to German company data answers whether a business is real: its registration, its VAT status, its solvency. This page answers a different question, which is how you notice when a competitor moves. The same registers hold both answers, but arranged for monitoring rather than verification: filings that signal a raise, insolvency notices that signal distress, trademark applications that signal a launch.
How to monitor competitors in Germany?
Pick sources that answer what you actually need to know: who they are, how they're doing, what just changed, or what's coming next, and check them as often as they change.
Germany's registries have to be checked by hand. For faster-moving signals like website changes, new subdomains, news, patents, and ad campaigns, a tool like IntelCue can watch those for you instead.

Annual accounts are free for a person to read on the Unternehmensregister and Bundesanzeiger, but neither offers an official free API, so bulk or programmatic access to German accounts is only available through paid third party services.

Germany has no free machine readable corporate event feed. Register changes appear only as HTML Registerbekanntmachungen on handelsregister.de, and insolvency notices are HTML search only on neu.insolvenzbekanntmachungen.de, so a competitor's register activity has to be polled by hand.

Restricted
Transparenzregister: Since the European Court of Justice ruling of 22 November 2022, unrestricted public access to German beneficial ownership data has ended. Members of the public must now demonstrate a legitimate interest for each entity, so the Transparenzregister is not an open lookup.
What you may collect
You may collect and store entity level facts: legal form, capital, filings, trademarks, insolvency status. German and EU data protection law limits what you may do with natural person data, and shareholder or director names in the Handelsregister are personal data, so treat them as reference you look up, not data you warehouse. The Transparenzregister, which lists beneficial owners, is no longer open to the public after the November 2022 European Court of Justice ruling and now requires a demonstrated legitimate interest.
A working routine
A workable weekly routine: search the Handelsregister and its Registerbekanntmachungen for changes to a competitor's entry, check the Unternehmensregister once a year when accounts are due, watch neu.insolvenzbekanntmachungen.de for distress in their supply chain, and run a monthly DPMAregister search for new trademarks or patents that hint at an unreleased product.
